HEALESVILLE’S award-winning artist Denise Smith has a unique perspective on the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges.
And, it’s a perspective she loves to share with both visitors and locals through her studio work, her teaching and wildlife sketch workshops.
As an artist specialising in nature and wildlife, she is renowned for her ability to capture the quirky personality and individuality of the birds and animals that are her passion.
Over the years Denise’s bushland studio at the foot of Healesville’s landmark Mount Riddell, has provided a memorable experience for tourists looking not only for a special souvenir to take home, but for an opportunity to meet and chat with an Australian artist.
Another opportunity Denise offers was sparked by her 12-year involvement with Healesville Sanctuary as a volunteer guide.
For anyone new to sketching, a three-hour sketch workshop is a great way to start, with Denise on hand to give some tuition.
For more experienced sketchers, Healesville Sanctuary offers both inspiration and challenge.
“The sketches are a unique memento of a holiday or visit to the Yarra Valley and can used as a basis to create a work that resonates on a very personal level,” said Denise, who knows all the best spots in the sanctuary, and how to avoid the crowds.
Denise offers a wide range of works from paintings, prints and cards in pastel, watercolour and acrylic to small pen and watercolour scenes of the Yarra Valley and pendants and brooches featuring selected images.
For many people who find that perfect memento of their visit here, it is equally the memories of spending time at Denise’s Wrendale Wildlife Studio, or at Healesville Sanctuary as part of a sketch group, that they recall as a truly unique and enjoyable experience.
