History and fine wine

The home of one of the region's largest and oldest estates.

COOMBE Yarra Valley is one of the largest and oldest family estates in the Yarra Valley.
Once the home of famous opera singer Dame Nellie Melba, the farm, vineyard and stunning new hospitality facility at Coombe Cottage are still owned and operated by her descendants.
The highly awarded, estate-grown wines are made by winemaker and general manager, Nicole Esdaile.
They are available for tasting among the vines on the farm on St Huberts Road, or in the stylishly restored stable block facility at the new Melba Estate at the junction of the Maroondah and Melba highways in Coldstream.
Coombe Farm is a James Halliday five-star winery and this year was listed as one of his ‘Dark Horse’ wineries to watch.
Also, it won the ‘Best Sparkling Wine’ trophy at the annual Yarra Valley Wine Show.
Wines are handcrafted in small volumes, and while served in many fine capital city restaurants, the full range is only available in the estate restaurant, cellar doors and online via the coombeyarravalley.com.au website.
The estate vineyards supply wine grapes to many of Australia’s finest wine producers and award-winning wines.
Nicole and Xavier Mende (vineyard manager) select from a range of clones and sites within the vineyard to produce a diverse range of wines from the region’s varietal specialties – chardonnay, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon – and an assortment of other less common drops.
The flagship wines are the sparkling Nellie Melba Blanc de Blancs, Coombe Farm Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Melba Estate Cellar Door is open for tasting seven days a week from 10am to 5pm.
Large groups and buses are welcome but prior notification is advisable.
The space is fresh, stylish and spacious and the staff welcoming and informative.
