THE Warburton Highway and the Warburton Rail Trail connect the small rural townships of Wandin and Seville for thousands of visitors each year.
However, for those who go off-track there’s much more to discover in the hills and valleys of this historic partnership.
Winter is the perfect time to explore the pioneering history of the region, enjoy a coffee or a wine beside a blazing log fire or take a stroll through the farmlands that are bookmarked on the rail trail by the two towns that provide a gateway to the Upper Yarra.
Take a day or two to enjoy Tourist News’ top five suggestions for a winter escape in Seville and Wandin.
1. Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead
Those who have ever wondered how the pioneers lived more than 100 years ago can take a trip back in time at Mont De Lancey.
Wandin’s earliest brick homestead and its gardens have been fully restored.
Descendants of the pioneer families will bring local history alive.
There is a working blacksmith forge, a museum, art gallery, shop and restaurant.
Wellington Road, Wandin.

2. Wineries
MANY are off the beaten track but those who dare to explore a little will find a treasure trove of wineries and vineyards, most offering spectacular views over the district’s iconic rolling farmlands.
Each has its own identity offering an experience that embraces everything from a rich café culture to fine wines and exemplary local produce to music and games to play.

3. The Rail Trail
WHETHER starting at Seville or Wandin, the 3.4 kilometre section of the Warburton Rail Trail is one of the prettiest sections of the 39km trail.
Bookmarked by the Rotary Rotunda at Wandin offering information on the township and the Carriage Café at Seville with a deviation down into the township, the trail takes travellers through farmland which is rich with birdlife. The gentle gradient makes it ideal for all levels of fitness and for families.

4. Country football.
“CARN the Doggies” … “Go Blues”*
For a taste of real, grass-roots football – the hot pies, coffee or a cold beer from the canteen and passionate supporters, a local footy match is a great way to spend a chilly ‘Satdy arvo’**. This isn’t the pristine Edihad or MCG stuff where the ground is manicured, the best view is on the big screen and the shorts stay white from first bounce to last.
This is old-school footy with all the fun, fans and fervour and where families can still afford the entry fee.

5. Warratina Lavender Farm
THIS is one of those ‘hobby that grew’ stories.
From a small plot of lavender to a farm that now has more than 10,000 lavender plants, Warrantina is a lavender experience from the plant to the final product, be it lavender scones or high-grade lavender oil.
There are seasonal activities from harvest to production and in winter the tea-rooms offer a warm haven enhanced by the tastes and scents of Lavender.
