Take your pick

LET’S face it – one of the best things about summer is not just the beautiful places to visit and enjoy the sunshine, but what you get to eat and drink when you do it.
And what better food to have during those hot days than fruit that you picked yourself?
The Yarra Valley and Dandenongs are bursting at the seams with fresh fruit picking, with plenty of seasonal fruit to be had as the valley warms up.
With strawberries, cherries, blackberries, raspberries, peaches, apricots and tomatoes in season, U-Pick farms have a huge offering, and the opportunity for visitors to see the whole process first-hand.
Many U-Pick farms also offer dessert or fruits direct from farm cafes, as well as other treats to cool off with – or coffee for those wanting a pick-me-up.
When planning a U-Pick day, remember to pack for a big day out – sunscreen, water bottles, snacks, hand-towels, good walking shoes and a wide-brimmed hat are all essential.
Bringing a change of clothes – or at least stain-proof clothes – may be a good idea, in case mud or fresh berries leave their mark, and bringing a bucket, basket or container may help with collecting.
Keeping berries or fruit in an open container will stop moisture from forming, while washing fruit before eating should stop them from going soft.
If you’re saving the berries for later, freeze them in a container without washing, to keep the skins from toughening.
But most of all enjoy yourself and eat your fill of some of the best produce in the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs.
