IS THERE anything more relaxing than wandering around a country market and trying to find a bargain?
The Cockatoo Country Market is one of those special places where you can get completely lost in the incredible atmosphere.
Nestled in a valley between Emerald and Gembrook, this market is a jewel in the crown for this special little town.
At the market you’ll find goods that are made, produced or grown by stallholders.
And if you hear a whistle shrieking through the trees, don’t fret … it’s likely to be Puffing Billy, which often runs through the centre of the town.
Market chairwoman Tanya Burmeister said Cockatoo was becoming a favourite for many market-goers.
“The market is going from strength to strength, while still maintaining its criteria of supporting local business and community groups, farmers’ fresh produce and local artisans wherever possible,” she said.
“It has just introduced a new theme to the market of vintage and collectable.
“Dedicated, loyal local producers, such as Australian Green Growers, have informed the market staff they now have a following at our market.
“It’s fantastic the way the community has embraced the market and it has now become a social event every month in the town of Cockatoo.”
Ms Burmeister said not only did country markets make for a great day out, they did some great work within the community.
Most recently, the market proudly offered its first round of community grants.
Nearly $2500 in grants were handed out to local community groups, including the Cockatoo Hills Men’s Shed, Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre, Cockatoo Nils Program, Cockatoo Tennis Club and Hillscene Live.
The market is open on the first Saturday of each month, from 9am to 2pm.
The Cockatoo Country Market is at 74-75 Pakenham Road, Cockatoo.
