TAKE a train ride through the Dandenongs, enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by natural beauty or spend the day soaking up the atmosphere at the Yarra Valley races. Whatever your relationship status is this Valentine’s Day, you’ll love the special events held around the valley.
The annual Puffing Billy Valentine’s Day dinner attracts guests from far and wide for a night of picturesque romance. Setting the scene will be a violinist at Puffing Billy’s Belgrave station before guests board the train for a scenic evening ride. Enjoy an entre and main course as the sun sets and the violinist strolls throughout the historic dining carriages. When the train pulls into Lakeside, get off and take a walk around the lake before reboarding for dessert and coffee on the return journey. The day of love presents the perfect opportunity for a picnic in one of the many park areas throughout the valley. Badger Weir picnic area encapsulates the beauty of the Healesville area or, for those looking for a workout, climb Upper Ferntree Gully’s Lyrebird Track and enjoy lunch at the One Tree Hill picnic area. Pack your own or head to one of the many local delis to sample some of the best fresh food in the region. If you need inspiration, why not try the scenic National Rhododendron Gardens in Olinda? ‘Mist@Olinda’ is located in the gardens and offers prepacked hampers for those wanting to enjoy lunch in the park. Including goodies such as Yarra Valley ham, Tasmanian tasty cheese, tomato chutney and gourmet salad, you’ll have everything you need for a relaxing afternoon in the park.
If you’re looking for a more thrilling atmosphere, Yarra Valley Racing will be hosting a race day on Valentine’s Day, 2015. The historic track is a treasure of the valley and holds many meets throughout the year. A family friendly event, enjoy food, wine and the horses as well as the music of the George Macfloyd Blues Band. Children enter for free and there will be activities to keep the kids entertained throughout the day.
