CREAM at Sassafras is the creation of two exceptionally creative and passionate foodies, Leenah and Mark Johnston.
Featuring only the best in Australian produce, the gourmet pantry and catering company offers something unique to the local food scene, which many customers are discovering and embracing.
The company was born in 2009 after Mark stumbled upon a rarely vacant shop in Sassafras and delved head first into the initiative.
The businesses focuses on regional and boutique Australian producers, and top quality and unique food items for discerning tastebuds.
Mark said it was a dream come true for the husband and wife team, because it combined all their passions.
All products on the shelves go through an extensive screening process, which involves an obligatory meet-and-greet session with the producer.
“If we haven’t met the producer, we won’t stock the item,” he said.
“We are real foodies, we are real passionate about food, we’ve travelled all over Australia to find our food and hand-picked the best of the best.
“It’s truly a love affair, just like I only have one wife and love Leenah, we believe if you love a food or a brand – that’s it, there’s no other for us,” Mark says.
The business comprises numerous aspects, including custom catering, online shopping, picnics and hampers, as well as their good old-fashioned taste-testing and quality service.
Mark said his customers were like part of an extended family and he encouraged testing and interaction.
Customers come from all over Melbourne and regularly visit from overseas.
Cream at Sassafras is regularly featured on 3AW and in other mainstream media.
“You’ve got to know how to treat people and we pride ourselves on that,” he said.
“People are free to taste-test with no obligation to buy.
“Try our cheeses, honey, nuts, trout, whatever you desire.”
Some of their partners are well-known leaders in the field, including Beechworth Honey, Whisk & Pin, Australian Harvest for their hayfever and sinus cure – organic horseradish vinegar and even celebrity author and restaurateur, Maggie Beer.
Cream at Sassafras is located at Shop 3/373 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Sassafras.
